Abstract

In this article the author takes issue with the exaggerated importance attributed to the Xiu in ethnohistorial sources, in contrast with the way in which the equally important, even preeminent, lineage of the Cocom is relegated to a secondary role. Historical reasons are examined to account for the ascendancy of the former and neglect of the latter under Spanish rule. A new look is also taken at the age-old enmity between the two lineages, and the episode of Hunac Ceel in several of the Books of Chilam Balam. In addition, new genealogical data from unpublished documents is presented on the Cocom.
