Abstract

This contribution emphasizes the importance of Max Uhle's "basic line of thought" which he adopted during his education and early professional years, being influenced by the intellectual trends and the general socio-economic conditions in his days. This "basic line of thought" determined fundamentally his analysis and interpretation of the "archaeological realities", the data he gained from excavations and archaeological surveys, as well as his comparative and summarizing studies. Focusing only on Uhle's activities in Peru this critical analysis will explain his theoretical and methodological premises and principles as well as his methods. In addition it will compare these with results of his empirical studies discussing the value of Uhle's work for today’s scholars' investigations.
