Abstract

One of the archaeological concepts developed by Uhle during his time in Ecuador in the twenties is the discovery and description of the culture he denominated "Chaullabamba". Analysis of the inventory and geographical distribution of this culture and comparison with the finds and associations described by Collier/Murra y Bennett in the forties/fifties and by Gomis de Idrovo, Guffroy and Bruhns in the eighties confirm that this culture did exist, that characteristic Chaullabamba ceramics, amulets, sculpture and architecture did form a cultural unit in the southern Ecuadorian sierra between Alausí and Loja. Surprisingly archaeological investigation had not related its results with the Uhle concept: When this concept is taken into account it is evident that Chaullabamba culture played a decisive paper in cultural communication between the coastal area of Ecuador and the central Andean area in the formative epoch. It is an important element for to comprehend the rise of Chavín civilization in Peru.
