Abstract

This paper analyzes a series of Prehispanic and Colonial representations of astronomical phenomena, and their relationship with Mesoamerica’s dual deities, especially Tezcatlipoca. The attributes of this God were used to characterize comets and to signify their apparition in socio-cultural terms. The designs in Codex Nuttall 10 and Tomb 2 of Mitla can be placed within this context, allowing the opportunity to confront traditional dates with the astronomical information contained in Old World annals.
