This contribution, which focuses on Chile, examines from a variety of perspectives the historical processes and recent developments in the formation and "erosion" of national identity as well as the transformations among multiple overlapping social identities. Starting with the articulation of the will of unity and the construction of the historical discourse (and the homogeneous territory of the state), it reviews the discourses within the social sciences with regard to globalisation versus diversity as well as the historical attitudes concerning diversity, and analyses the crisis of the idea of the nation state and the growing fragmentation of identities.Downloads
