This article discusses wills of the indigenous elite as a type of documentation used in Andean ethnohistory. Wills appear to be one of the most personal and private document types. In spite of this intimacy, wills follow juridical requirements and religious prescriptions which determine many aspects of their contents. This study concentrates on these formal parts of wills. On the basis of examples of 16th century wills, it will be reconstructed which norms had to be followed to make a valid will, and to what extent the content of the will could express the wishes of the person making it.Downloads
