Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe language change phenomena among the Pilagá (Guaycuruan linguistic family) and Wichí (Mataco-Mataguayan linguistic family) Indians of Argentina, as a result of the linguistic contact between their languages and Spanish. Changes are framed into wider socio-cultural processes that affect language use, in situations of social and politically fragile speech communities. This study is contextualized in the ethnographic and sociolinguistic background of these ethnic groups. The analysis of language change phenomena is based on data collected during fieldwork since 1997, undertaken in several communities (Pozo del Tigre, Las Lomitas and Juan G. Bazán) in the central area of Formosa Province in Argentina.
