Abstract

In order to describe the genesis and current status of the programme, the paper provides an overview of the history of education for the Mapuche in Argentina, an understanding of education in Mapuche culture, and the steps taken to implement Intercultural Bilingual Education (EIB) in Argentina, in general as well as in the province of Neuquén in particular. The present contribution is based on the Magister Artium of the author and describes the specific situation in three rural schools in Mapuche communities which cooperate with the Special Teachers program. In doing so, the paper demonstrates the difficulty in implementing the right to an Intercultural Bilingual Education within the real environment of the local Mapuche population.
