This study attempts to analyse a social, mythical and ritual phenomenon of the Maya area before the Spanish conquest (Classical and Postclassic): the importance of the dwarves. Using archaeological and ethnographical materials and a comparative approach, this article focuses on the civilizing role of the dwarves, the symbolism of the thunderbolt, the relationship of the dwarves to the 'bacab complex' and its inherent ambiguity.Downloads
