Abstract

Since the introduction of the Ecuadorian Constitution in 2008, the new concept of Good Living or Sumak Kawsay appears in discussions of development. The concept of Good Life proposes a life in harmony with nature and is seen as an alternative to modernizing development. Until now, Good Life held a marginal position in the discourse of society and the indigenous movement with its long tradition of criticizing development and demanding nature conservation. In 2007/2008, the indigenous movement started talking about Sumak Kawsay as a unique concept that integrates its criticism of capitalist development. Here we will discuss the development of the concepts of the indigenous organizations that led to the introduction of the concept of Good Living and the role that it acquired in the discourse of this movement.
