Abstract

This paper aims to show, how the Mexican state in its historical development has used Mexican archeology as a tool for building a Mexican identity: the ‘Mexicanidad’. In this process, the museums and the city of Mexico have been key components: Museums as safeguarding the homeland that, in the historic discourse, begins with the pre-Hispanic world, and Mexico City as a display – a public display of that historic discourse.
