Abstract

Being an exception during Colonial times, war alliances between the Chiriguano and the Toba of Pilcomayo River became common during the second half of the 19th century in order to deal with the pressing colonization. For the Chiriguano that fled this Colonial offensive, the Gran Chaco became a refuge. These alliances did not survive their final defeat in 1874. Though they failed to go beyond traditional antagonism between both ethnic groups, they induced the rise of a Guaraní-Chaco Indian army which was the source of the Toba messianic movements of the early 20th century.
