Abstract

This work endeavors to partially reconstruct some of the rituals that were celebrated in two separate archaeological sites on the edge of the Puruhuay lake (Huari Province, Department of Ancash, Peru) between the end of the Formative Period and the 7th century AD. A change in the ritual practices has been observed during at least two important periods of the sites’ occupancy, revealing two different, yet connected ways of celebrating the lake. Since the site is considered the most important paqarina of the area, these episodic rituals have contributed to the construction of a ‘Puruhuay mythology’ that has persisted even until present day.
