Abstract

The Globus magazine was created in the context of the institutional foundation of German ethnology (Völkerkunde) with the aim of disseminating ethnographic studies and travel reports from all over the world. Considering the pioneering German expeditions in Brazil, and the importance they have had in the development of Brazilian ethnology, this work explores some of the South American content of the journal, paying particular attention to the dialogue between the ‘men of science’ and the ‘travelers’ (immigrants, settlers, merchants).
