Abstract

In this article I review Martín de Azpilcueta’s Manual de confesores y penitentes which can be seen as a reference text for the study of colonial confession manuals in relation to Iberian texts of this genre. Azpilcueta’s work lends itself as a point of reference for three main reasons: the confluence of Spanish and Portuguese documented in this text is part of the Latin American cultural heritage; its authority and pre-eminence in Counter-Reformation Europe is undisputed; and its evident presence in Latin American Christian texts is documented especially through the influence of Azpilcueta on the Jesuit missionaries. After placing the work in its historical context and clarifying its complex editorial history, I analyse its treatment of the sins related to the first and sixth commandments, using a ‘simplified’ version of it, the Compendio y sumario de confesores, recorded in shipments to the Indies and easily adaptable to purposes of Christianisation.
