Abstract

The present paper focuses on clarifying the origins of the Mexican dates from the period of the Spanish Conquest. It is shown that they were not recorded at that time, but that they are rather the product of reconstruction at a later date, in some cases as late as the second half of the 16th century. At the same time, it calls for reflection on the historical approaches to the topic which have hitherto been used. This also leads us to clarify the inconsistencies in their use by modern authors. The findings change the direction of the investigation and challenge many previous conclusions, since they contradict any correlation between the date 1-cohuatl and August 13, 1521.
