Abstract

This text on a comparative environmental ethics theme traces elements of the world view of Zapotecs residing in the Sierra Sur in the Mexican state of Oaxaca with the aim of illuminating some current debates in the discipline. After presenting the group studied, as well as their religious concepts, the article discusses the two most relevant aspects in order to achieve this objective: first, the existence of deities responsible for protecting the environment; second, the attachment of communities to their territory, which they consider sacred. The text ends with some suggestions about how an appreciation of the Southern Zapotec world view could fruitfully contribute to the dialogue on environmental ethics.
