In this article I propose a genealogy of the terminology employed by archaeology in Argentina to approach the so-called ‘pictographs’ and ‘petroglyphs’ from the late 19th century until the establishment of ‘arte rupestre’, around 1960. This analysis enables us to observe how this transformation was developed on terminological and conceptual axis of writing-art.
