This article offers an introduction to theological reflections on Mary, Virgin and Mother of God. It provides an overview of the development of the most relevant Marian concepts in the process of translating Christianity into the indigenous languages of the Americas in the 16th to 18th centuries. The discussion on Mary is based on Jesus Christ and his role as saviour. Christian reflection on Mary is introduced in four thematic sections: The virginal motherhood of Mary, Mother of God; Mary as the ‘new Eve’; the concepts of the Immaculate Virgin and the Assumption; and the Virgin Mary in catechetical writings and Marian prayers. The fundamental convictions of theological reflections on Mary and their significance for theological discourse then and now are illustrated.
