The Franciscan missions of the Bolivian Chaco have been considered exclusively as Chiriguanian Indigenous precincts, without actually paying much attention to their internal diversity and even less to the presence of Chacoan ethnic groups that coexisted with them. This paper shows the multiethnic characteristic of the missions and the types of contacts between the different groups that, despite the Franciscan policies, continued to follow their own rules. Contrary to the traditional view that considers Chiriguano and Chacoan Peoples as separate worlds, these contacts insert the Chiriguanos into the Chaco ethnic landscape.
