Resumo

The present work stems from a trip to the Allegany Indian Reservation of the Seneca in New York State, in autumn 1971. With the speech of Longhouse Chief Mr. Harry Watt as its centre-piece, it gives an impression of the life and basic attitude of a modern Seneca. This basic attitude can of course be considered exemplary only for Longhouse members, who form the most conservative group among the Seneca and the Iroquois generally.
