Resumo

The rock art of Panama comprises a great variety of petroglyphs. Especially in the western region a lot of engravings have been found. The article reports on a study realized by the author in collaboration with the Museo de Historia y de Arte José Obaldía in 1999. Thereby stones with petroglyphs in nine territorial areas of the Chiriquí province have been documented. At the beginning, the results of rock art research in Panama and the natural environment of the Chiriquí are outlined. By describing the Piedra Pintal of Caldera the characteristics of Chiriquian petroglyphs are analyzed, representing their environmental, cultural and ethnic context. The article, then, gives some comments on various methods and results of interpreting petroglyphs. Finally, the author discusses the difficulties and obstacles in the protection of petroglyphs.
