Abstract
During the last quarter of nineteenth century, the Spanish intellectual field undergoes a series of changes that jeopardize the intergenerational relations of its members. The complex bond between Menéndez y Pelayo and his disciple Unamuno constitutes an exemplary case of that moment. One of the debates that causes the greatest tension among them is the one about the relation between History and Literature. Thus, it turns out indispensable to locate the discussion that they maintain on that subject in the coordinates that each generates regarding the philosophical and historical models to follow. In this sense, as well, the deciphering of the authors that each one of them chooses would allow to see some of the generic and stylistic changes that operate in their respective ways to understand and write the cultural history of Spain.
