This paper analyzes the representations of “Americanism” in the Argentinian political intellectual debate during the Paraguayan War. In contrast to the popular revisionist approach, we find that the “American” ideal appears in a weak way during the conflict. The idea of “Americanism” was more related to the contemporary war between Chile and Spain. The view of contemporary actors shows that the Paraguayan War reveals more the weaknesses than the strengths of “Americanist” dicourse.Downloads
