This article explores the importance of the Associação Portugal-RDA, particularly in the first years of its existence (1974 to 1976), for both the relations between Portugal and the German Democratic Republic and the transition process of Portugal. First, we identify the interests each of the partners had in establishing cultural relationships. Then, we offer an analysis of the political-cultural framework from which the association emerged, focussing on the actors who participated in its creation and development. Finally, we evaluate the role the association played in the negotiation of socialist ideals within the processes of political and cultural change of both societies in contact.
