This article examines Chinese perspectives on classical Latin American populism. Direct exchange between the two sides is still limited, and a systematization of the accumulated knowledge in China can be a valuable contribution to strengthening it. In the first part, the article briefly reviews the origins and uses of the concept of populism in Latin America and the characteristics of the classic cases. It then addresses the origins and translations of the concept of populism in China. Based on a selection of academic texts by Chinese authors on classic Latin American populisms, the third part conducts a content analysis of these studies, identifying the main thematic cores, the key trends in the use of translations of the concept, the Latin American authors cited and the views of Chinese authors on the topic. In the last section, it offers some lines to contribute to South-South academic dialogue.
