Urban Journeys and Intersectionality: Geographies of Inequality in the Appropriation of Public Space in Mexico City

Abstract

In this qualitative research, I analyze how the intersection of class with other dimensions of categorical inequality (gender, sexuality, and racialization) produces differentiated situations of vulnerability and discrimination in the experience of public space by young people from popular sectors. I focus on two different spatial scenarios in which youth from popular sectors encounter the “other”. On the one hand, I analyze experiences of exclusion and discrimination when these young people exceptionally visit places of consumption and recreation oriented towards upper-middle and high-class sectors. On the other hand, I analyze the insecurities and urban violence associated with the use of public transportation in their daily routines of moving around and through the city.
