Abstract
This essay works through a number of chronicles, which appeared in newspapers during the drought the Argentine province of Santiago del Estero suffered in 1937. It compares these with essays from local writers addressing the relations between ecocide and socio-cultural crisis in the Argentine Northwest. Landscape will be discussed as a way of expressing the destructive aspects of modernity, articulating multiple effects of crisis unleashed by the expansion of urban capitalism into the rural world.
