El monumento a Garibaldi en Buenos Aires fue inaugurado en la actual plaza Italia (1904). La iniciativa surgió de la comunidad italiana después de la muerte del general, apoyada por grupos de poder vinculados a la clase hegemónica. En este artículo estudiamos el proceso por el cual grupos sociales y políticos usaron al monumento como instrumento para expresar sus intereses culturales y políticos.
Abstract
The monument to Garibaldi in Buenos Aires was inaugurated in actual Plaza Italia (1904). The idea arose from the Italian community after his death (1882). It was also supported by groups belonging to the leading class. This paper studies the process in which political and social groups have tried to find by means of this statue an instrument to express their cultural and political interests.
