El tema de África en la obra ensayística de Miguel de Unamuno: identidad cultural y ubicación intelectual

Resumen

El autor estudia el tema de África tal y como aparece en la prosa ensayística unamuniana, especialmente en su conocido artículo “Sobre la europeización”, para ponerlo en relación con su posterior polémica dirigida contra la campaña militar en el Rif, a principios de los años veinte. Como es sabido, en dicho artículo se enlaza una españolización del racionalismo europeo con una imagen positiva, en cierta forma metafórica, de África. Menos conocidas resultan la larga tradición de esta metáfora tópica y las implicaciones filosóficas que conlleva la actualización del tema por Unamuno. En el artículo se investiga el valor funcional que alcanza la imagen de África en cuanto al discurso identitario de Unamuno y su relación deambulante con su criterio político durante la Guerra de Marruecos. Se toman en consideración asimismo sus deliberaciones acerca del colonialismo, que son sumamente relevantes a la hora de tematizar las reflexiones del autor vasco sobre la presencia militar de los españoles en el Norte de África.

 Abstract

The author studies the subject of Africa in the essays of Miguel de Unamuno – with special attention to the well-known article “Sobre la europeización”, in order to establish a relationship to his later polemics of the beginning of the twenties, directed against the military campaign undertaken by the Spanish nation in the north of Morocco. In this essay Unamuno combines – as is known – the thesis of ‘hispanization’ of European culture and rationalism with a positive, in a certain way metaphoric image of Africa. The long tradition of this metaphor is less known, neither are the philosophical implications ofthe actualization brought forward by Unamuno. In this article the function of the Africaimage is related as well to the discourse of cultural identity reflected by the Basque writer as to his changing political attitude towards the Spanish war in the Riff. Unamuno’s deliberations about colonization, which represent an aspect highly relevant in the context of the Spanish military presence in the north of Africa, are also examined.
