The subject of the study is to draw an intercultural comparison between the cognitive realities of Spaniards and Maya. This is carried out with various lexical, syntactic and semantic examples taken from Fray Antonio de Ciudad Real's Diccionario de Motul (published after 1577), a dictionary of colonial Yucatec Maya. The study was realized within the scope of the project to publish a new edition of this very important linguistic, ethnosemantic, and ethnohistorical source of colonial Yucatan. In fields where the traditional Maya life had been subjugated to the new Hispanic Christian ethical values by the missionaries one can find among the entries of the dictionary some of their obsessions, especially those referring to the relations between women and men, as well as the underlying cultural conflicts.Downloads
