Abstract

This paper describes and interprets a carved stela found in Noriega, a site near Zaachila, Oaxaca. Following previous commentators, it is postulated that the reliefs provide information on a royal lineage. New identifications of the personages represented leads to a hypothetical genealogical sequence. By assuming that the narrative pictography and the epigraphy in the slab have a complementary relation, the analysis of all the graphic elements, of the postures of the individuals and of their garments, suggest that the depicted rituals validate the claims of a child named 6 Owl to rulership.
