Abstract

This study explores a number of accusations and repre-sentations that had strong repercussion in an indigenous Toba (qom) community in eastern Formosa (Argentina), due to the settlement of a new religious group, the mormons. In an attempt to understand the social origins and development of the conflict, the study pays particular attention to the cultural representations of the Other considering the circulation of rumours as to the underlying intentions this church had in its mission in this area. It is here that neocolonial metaphors appear, sustained in an mitho-praxis imagery populated by blood-drinking monsters and syringe-wielding gringos.
