Abstract

This paper analyzes the political, economic and educative activities of the Society of Jesus in colonial Charcas through the figure of the prestigious father Diego Martínez (1542-1626). He was an expert missionary who had worked in the missions of Juli (1576-1586) and Santa Cruz de la Sierra (1587-1600). His departure from the residence of Santa Cruz de la Sierra to the College of La Plata (or Chuquisaca) reveals the intense debates within the Ignatian order as regards to the educational and mission policies to follow. The presence of such a reputed and well-balanced man in the city of La Plata was instrumental to project an image of dedication and commitment among his comrades. But Father Martínez was not satisfied with his destination, because his wish was always to die heroically in the missions of Upper Peru.
