Abstract

Among the Zoquean musicians of the state of Chiapas, Mexico, the dream world constitutes an area of reflexivity because it is a catalyst of the memory and its transmission. This article presents an ethnography of dreams as another world in which the musicians receive a divine gift to become ritual specialists. The dreams reproduce the dynamics of the musical interpretation: creation, interpretation and transmission of musical knowledge. The data obtained in fieldwork reveal a musical universe beyond its formal structure since it appears as an abstract space that translates the dreams of the musicians into a narration that is created collectively through a process of reflexivity.
