Abstract

Tapietes (Tupi-Guarani) are one of the indigenous groups that have only recently been systematically described in Argentina. In the last few years, linguistic and ethnographic fieldwork has been carried out among this people who live in Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina. This article discusses, from a linguistic and an ethnobotanic perspective, a particular aspect of Tapiete culture, namely the knowledge of the botanic diversity of the Chaco region in the province of Salta. From fieldwork conducted among the Tapietes in Argentina, it presents the first results of interdisciplinary research on Tapiete ethnobotany, specifically discussing the ethnobotanic vocabulary. The main mechanisms in the formation plant names are described as a preliminary and essential step in elucidating the principles that underlie the taxonomic classification of the vegetal world among the Tapietes.
