Abstract

This article presents an investigation of the main causes of migration of the Wayuu to urban areas of Colombia and Venezuela and the effect this has caused on the contact between Wayuunaiki and Spanish. Through interviews, ethnographic observations and bibliographic consultations, we identify the voluntary and forced causes of this long-lasting migration that continues to develop. The settlement in urban areas and the growing bilingualism of the Wayuu facilitates the development of an ethnolect specific to the ethnic group, distinguished by the use of lexical borrowings, morphosyntactic combinations and codeswitching. This paper contributes to the existing literature by identifying more features and examples of the products of this linguistic and cultural contact.
