Abstract

The Mocoví is the language of the Mocoví people who live exclusively in Argentina within specific areas of the provinces of Chaco and Santa Fe. This language belongs to the Guaycurú linguistic family and does not have morphological marking of tense: this function is realised with other categories or other resources. In this paper we describe various constructions that allow temporary marking in this language. For this purpose data from the Santa Fe variant obtained in direct field work are presented and analyzed. This analysis will show how different types of structure are involved in marking temporality. This allows us to postulate the compositionality of the expression of temporality in this language through various resources such as grammatical aspect, lexical aspect, diminutive morphemes, determinants, nominals and applicatives. Finally, the article will discuss the hypothetical possibility that the irrealis mode and evidential mode found in some verbs collaborate with the marking tense.
